The Project:
"To review the operating efficiency of the outsourced UK transport operations, identify areas for improvement and assist in implementation.."
|
Background
Bison had outsourced their transport operations to a third party
service provider, who transported product from 3 UK plants to
construction sites throughout England & Wales. While this operation
was under contract, neither party was pleased with the situation. The
transport company was making minimal returns, while Bison was
frustrated at the poor service.
Activities
- Bisham undertook a full audit of the operation and conducted
interviews with various staff , at all levels, from both companies.
- We mapped out all the processes, reviewed operating procedures and
communication protocols, analysed the key performance indicators.
- The fleet was re-assessed to consider the optimum size and type of tractors and trailers required.
- Key staff were evaluated as were their locations and reporting structures.
Outputs
- A full audit report was produced that gave specific recommendations
regarding operations and procedures. Communications, roles and
responsibilities were totally transformed. New performance measures
were recommended. A re-location of key transport staff into the plants
and a number of new positions were proposed.
-
The optimum fleet size and type were identified.
-
A new pricing structure was proposed.
Results
- Both parties accepted all recommendations and assigned Bisham the task of implementation
- New mutually agreed operating procedures were implemented
- Day to day transport operations were re-located into the plants
- A new contract and pricing structure was implemented
- Delivery failures dropped by more than 50%
- Delivery costs reduced while financial returns to the transport operator improved
